Are Aussie pokies designed to make you zone out?

I had a weird moment last week—sat down to play a pokie at my local, and after 20 minutes, I realized I’d completely zoned out. Like, I was hitting spin automatically, barely registering the wins or losses.

Did some digging, and turns out that’s by design. Australian pokie machines use "losses disguised as wins" (LDWs) to keep your brain engaged. You might "win" $0.20 on a $1 spin, but the flashing lights and sounds trick your brain into thinking you’re doing well. It’s basically casino hypnosis.

I still play pokies for fun, but knowing this kinda changed my perspective. Ever get that autopilot feeling while playing? Or is it just me?
