How I use poker winnings to fund my travel lifestyle

I’ve been traveling full-time for the last five years, and poker has been a big part of how I sustain my nomadic life. I don’t play for crazy high stakes, but online poker—especially multi-table tournaments—has given me solid payouts that help cover flights, accommodations, and the occasional splurge.

Last month, I was sitting in a beachside cafe in Bali, sipping on a coconut, when I decided to jump into a 3-card poker game just for fun. What started as a casual session turned serious when I hit a full house on one hand and then followed it up with a string of decent wins. I turned a $50 buy-in into $2,000 over a few days—enough to fund my next three weeks of travel expenses.

Texas Hold’em is usually my go-to, but I’ve found that mixing in 3-card poker hands in fast-paced games keeps things interesting. Some platforms even offer live dealer options, which makes it feel more like a real casino, even when I’m thousands of miles from the nearest one.

The best part? No office, no commute—just me, my laptop, and an internet connection. Sure, I’ve had my bad streaks (let’s not talk about that one time in Vietnam when I lost a whole day’s budget on a risky all-in), but the freedom poker gives me is unmatched.

Any other nomads out there funding their travels through gambling? What’s your go-to game?
