I was teaching my son basic probability the other day, and it reminded me how often poker players rely on gut instincts instead of actual odds. For instance, I’ve seen countless players overplay hands like suited connectors, convinced they'll hit a flush, when in reality the odds are around 0.8% for a flush on the flop. Even drawing to a flush by the river only happens about 19% of the time, yet people treat it like a sure thing.
Another common misstep is misjudging the value of pocket pairs. While they’re strong pre-flop, the odds of hitting a set are just under 12%. A lot of folks go all-in too early, only to be outdrawn. It's fascinating how the human brain loves to focus on the big payoff instead of the slim chances of getting there.
Personally, I’ve learned to make probability my foundation in poker, but it’s not always easy. Intuition does have a role, especially when reading opponents, but I’ve also had moments where ignoring the math led to disaster. One example? Overbetting a gutshot straight draw, hoping for that one perfect card, only to see the pot vanish into thin air.
So how do you strike the balance? Do you stick rigidly to odds, or do you let intuition guide you in some spots? Have you ever had a big win—or a big loss—that taught you the power of math at the table?
