The time I almost lost my phone to a dingo, but won big on the pokies

Being a wildlife ranger in Australia means you see some pretty wild things—literally. Last month, I was camped out near Fraser Island (K’gari for the locals) tracking dingoes for a conservation project. As I was setting up my gear, I left my phone on a rock for a second. Next thing I know, this sneaky dingo sniffs it, grabs it in its mouth, and starts trotting off like it’s got a new chew toy.

Panic mode kicked in. My whole life was on that phone—work contacts, bets, and my favorite online casino app. So, I did what any reasonable person would do: I whistled, clapped, and threw a granola bar as a distraction. The dingo dropped my phone, and I’ve never been more relieved in my life.

Still buzzing from the chaos, I hopped on my phone later that night and spun a few rounds on Big Bass Bonanza—ended up turning $20 into $500. Talk about balance in the universe. Ever had a crazy moment before hitting a lucky streak?
