When did gambling become Toronto’s weekend vibe?

So, I was visiting Toronto last month—first time there, and wow, the city’s got a whole different energy. I was crashing at my friend’s place downtown, and one night, we’re just hanging out, music playing, everyone chillin’—next thing I know, half the room’s placing bets on the Leafs game like it’s part of the pre-game ritual. And it wasn’t just sports—someone pulled up an online slots app, another was in a poker tournament, and suddenly, it felt like I’d stepped into this whole underground world of weekend gambling.

I get the appeal—it’s quick, easy, and low-stakes, plus the apps make it feel more like playing a game than gambling. But what really stuck with me was how normal it all seemed. Ads were everywhere—in the arena, on billboards, during game breaks—it’s like gambling’s become part of the city’s culture.

Back home in Vancouver, it’s popular too, but Toronto just hits different. I’m curious—does it feel this big for everyone who lives there, or was I just caught up in the moment? Either way, I left with a few extra bucks from a lucky blackjack session, so no complaints here!
