Do you tip the dealer on a good hand if you're still down from where you started?

Do you still tip the dealer on a win if you’re still underwater? I was at a Chase the Flush table the other night, starting with 100 bucks. Got down to a measly 20 when I hit a small bonus that got me back to 80. I tossed the dealer a 5 on that, but a bit later, I was back down to 20 again (classic, right?). Hit another bonus, this time up to 60, but didn’t tip.

Here’s where the drama kicks in—my wife’s telling me I should tip on any bonus, no matter the size. I’m like, “Hold on, I’m still down overall!” I get it if it’s a 50-to-1 kind of win, but tipping every time on a 7-to-1? Feels like throwing away chips that could keep me in the game. She’s super generous with dealer tips (respect), but she also tends to walk away losing 75% of the time.

So, what’s the real etiquette here? Are you supposed to tip on any bonus win, even if you’re still in the red? Or does it depend on how much you’re winning? Curious to see where everyone lands on this—dealers’ thoughts welcome too!

I usually tip on big wins or if I’m breaking even. Dealers appreciate tips, but they get it if you’re struggling. Just don’t leave the table without tipping at least once if you’ve been there a while.
