How a casino movie night turned into my new favorite hobby

A few months ago, Alex and I were scrolling through streaming platforms trying to find something fun to watch. He suggested Molly’s Game, a movie about underground poker games and high-stakes gambling. I’d heard of it but never really thought of myself as the "casino" type. Still, we made some popcorn, dimmed the lights, and dove in. By the end, I was hooked—not just on the movie but on the whole vibe of strategy, risk, and excitement.

After the movie, Alex, ever the instigator, said, "You know, we could try playing poker ourselves." That’s how it all started. We found a few online platforms to try out some games, starting small and just learning the basics. At first, I stuck with slots because they’re simple and visually appealing—perfect for someone like me who loves a little artistry in their games. But soon, we moved into blackjack and poker, where the strategy reminded me of the tension and thrill I’d just seen in the movie.

Now, Friday nights have a new twist. We’ll pour some wine, play a few hands of poker online, or try our luck at live dealer games. I’ve got to admit, it’s become a fun way for us to unwind together after a long week. I’m still learning the ropes, but there’s something so satisfying about making the right call or hitting a good win, even if it’s not quite Molly Bloom levels of stakes!

Has anyone else ever been inspired to try gambling after a good movie? And if you’ve got other casino-themed movies to recommend, let me know—Alex and I are always looking for our next watch (and maybe a new game to play after).
