Backing a friend for a pool match—what's a fair markup?

Gambling Tools Odds · Parlay · Bonus
I’ve been in the poker backing game for over 20 years, but I’ve never dipped my toes into backing for other competitions until now. A buddy of mine has a chance to play in a high-stakes 2v2 pool match, and he’s asked me to back him.

Here’s the kicker—he and his partner actually beat the other duo last week, so they’ve got some history of success here. But I’m completely clueless about what a fair markup would look like in this scene. Is it similar to poker, or are we talking entirely different terms?

Would love to hear from anyone with experience in this kind of backing, or just general advice on how to approach it. Thanks in advance for the help!

18+ only. Gamble responsibly:

Why not treat it like an informal loan? Cover their entry fee and agree on a 50/50 split of winnings after expenses. Easy and fair for both sides.

If it’s just a one-off, maybe skip markup entirely and go for a share of the prize pool, like 60/40 or 70/30, depending on what feels fair.
